The Surrey Lions were born in 2010, when a group of like-minded hockey enthusiasts came together with a shared love of ice hockey—and the ambition to create a team of their own.

After a successful sponsorship campaign and a competition that invited local children to design our logo, the Surrey Lions were officially launched in style. In front of a crowd of around 500 people, and with the help of the Guildford Flames, we took to the ice for a fun exhibition match against the local junior team. And so, the Lions were off and skating!

Since those early days, the team has gone from strength to strength. Many of our original players are still actively involved today, helping to preserve the spirit and sense of community that have always been at the heart of the Lions.

We play and train at the Guildford Spectrum and are affiliated with the English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA). As a recreational team, we regularly arrange games with local opposition, while the 2025/26 season marked an exciting new chapter as we joined Division 5 of the Southern Rec Cup.

But for us, hockey has always been about much more than what happens on the ice. Inclusivity is a big part of who we are, with men and women of mixed abilities coming together to enjoy team sport, share a passion for hockey and, of course, have a good time along the way.

And the fun doesn't stop at the final whistle. Our social calendar has included award dinners, international trips, running the London Marathon in our hockey kit, and even the occasional festival. It's all part of what makes the Surrey Lions more than just a hockey team—we're a community of players, friends and fellow hockey lovers.
